AMES, Iowa - No. 30 Iowa State closed out the regular season with a dominant performance, beating West Virginia, 6-1, Sunday afternoon at Ames Fitness Center. The Cyclones (15-5, 4-5 Big 12) finish the season with four victories in Big 12 play, which matches the school record set by last year's squad for conference wins. West Virginia falls to 7-16 overall and 0-9 in the Big 12.
The Cyclones jumped out to early leads on all three courts in doubles, but the Mountaineers battled to keep it close. Thasaporn Naklo and Christin Hsieh were the first pairing to strike as they picked up a ranked win over West Virginia's No. 73 duo of Ting-Pei Chang and Camilla Bossi.
At No. 3 doubles, Chie Kezuka and Ange Oby Kajuru fought off a comeback attempt from Anastasia Bovolskaia and Tatiana Lipatova to secure the doubles point for Iowa State, winning 6-4. To complete the doubles sweep, Miska Kadleckova and Sofia Cabezas also picked up a 6-4 victory at the No. 2 slot.
Iowa State carried its momentum into singles action, taking the first set on all four courts. Anna Supapitch Kuearum was the first Cyclone to add a singles win, beating Momoko Nagato in straight sets. Naklo and Kajuru quickly followed with their own straight-set victories to clinch the match for the Cyclones.
On court four, Kadleckova looked dominant in the first set, winning 6-1, but fell behind, 5-1, in the second set to her former Cyclone teammate, Ting-Pei Chang. Despite the deficit, Kadleckova continued to fight and won six straight games to take the match.
At No. 5 singles, Chie Kezuka made history as she dominated West Virginia's Bossi in straight sets. It was her eighth Big 12 victory of the year, which sets a new Iowa State record for conference wins in a single season. Kezuka finishes the regular season with an 8-1 conference singles record.
The Cyclones will be back in action on Thursday as postseason play begins at the Big 12 Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.
