ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Iowa State (1-2-1) women's soccer secured their first victory of the 2022 season after taking down No. 24 Michigan 3-2. The victory over the Wolverines is the program's first win over a ranked non-conference opponent since 2016 when they defeated No. 21 Auburn 1-0.Â
A quick goal by Michigan in the fourth minute put the Wolverines up 1-0 but Iowa State quickly responded. Seniors Mira Emma and Jada Colbert combined to score two goals in four minutes to put the Cyclones up 2-1.
Iowa State and Michigan went scoreless for the next 53 minutes before Michigan tied the match in the 64th minute 2-2.
In the 81st minute, freshman Sophia Thomas found the back of the net for the first time in her Iowa State career to put the Cyclones up 3-2.Â
The Cyclones held on for the final nine minutes to secure the victory.
How It HappenedÂ
The Wolverines scored a goal to go up 1-0 in the 4th minute.
In the 7th minute, Mira Emma scored her first goal of the season to tie the match 1-1.
Emma's goal was her ninth goal as a Cyclone.
A few minutes later, in the eleventh minute, Jada Colbert scored her second career ISU goal to put Iowa State up 2-1.
Jada Colbert's goal was the second of her Cyclone career and her 11th career collegiate goal.
The Cyclones registered four corner kicks and two shots the rest of the first half.
In the second half, the Wolverines out-shot the Cyclones 2-1 before finding the back of the net in the 64th minute to tie the match 2-2.
Michigan continued attacking, the Wolverines recorded five shots in the 10 minutes following the tying goal but couldn't capitalize.
Three shots were off target and two were blocked.
In the 81st minute, freshman Sophia Thomas scored her first career goal after a clearing attempt by a Wolverines defender left Thomas with open space and the Michigan goalie out of position.
Michigan out-shot Iowa State 15-6 in the match.
Mira Emma and Sophia Thomas each recorded two shot attempts for Iowa State in the match.
