AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (4-2, 0-1 Big 12) landed their fourth victory of the season and third win at home, taking down UNI (12-4, 1-0 MVC) by 213.5-85.5. West Virginia (5-2, 1-0 Big 12) topped Iowa State by 157-142 as it was the Cyclones first conference match-up. The Cyclones won four events, and in 13 of the 16 events had top-two placements.
Brinley Horras went on to secure the 1000 free title for the Cyclones with a time of 10:19.77. Senior Madison Rundell placed in second, touching the wall at 10:29.83.
Another record-holder, Sophia Goushchina, notched a first-place finish with 55.52 in the 100 back.
Trinity Kay was victorious in the 200 IM, earning a time of 2:03.73.
"It was a great swim for Trinity in her last 200 IM as a Cyclone in Beyer Hall," head coach Duane Sorenson said.
Gabrielle LePine made her debut on the all-time top-performers list in the 200 breast for her second-place finish and time of 2:18.60. She now ranks as the 17th fastest swimmer in program history. She also placed second in the 100 breast, recording a time of 1:03.32, just 0.19 seconds off the win.
"Gabrielle had two really great swims against one of the best 100 and 200 breaststrokers in the country from West Virginia," Sorenson said.
In the 3-meter springboards, Joscelyn Buss and Kate Mitchell both earned an NCAA Championship Zone cuts for their performances. Buss placed in first with a score of 291.50 and Mitchell in second with a score of 280.45. Jayna Misra treaded behind in third with a score of 279.30, just missing the Zone cut mark.
Horras secured a second-place finish with 5:03.48 in the 500 free while freshman Corinne Guist followed up behind while recording a time of 5:05.37.
Winter Craig earned second place for her time of 2:05.15 in the 200 fly.
Sophomore Carley Caughron notched a second-place finish with 52.19 in the 100 free while also securing a top-three finish in the 50 free, earning a time of 24.12.
Freshman Madi Dohrn made the top-two in the 200 back, clocking in a time of 2:03.32.
Ashley Bengtson touched the wall at 1:54.04 in the 200 free for a third-place finish. Kay claimed third place with her 100 fly performance of 57.36.
In the 1-meter springboards, Buss earned the third spot with a score of 264.35. Misra placed in fifth with a score of 256.90.
"A very close Big 12 dual meet with West Virginia, but that's the name of the game. Proud of our women's effort and the swims they had," Sorenson said.
ON DECK- TCU and North Texas
The Cyclones will travel to Fort Worth, Texas for a match-up against TCU on Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. Following the meet, Iowa State will take on North Texas at 1 p.m. on Jan. 28 in Denton, Texas.
