FORT WORTH, Texas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (5-2, 1-1 Big 12) earned its first Big 12 victory of the season against TCU (2-6, 0-1 Big 12) by 173–127 on Friday. The Cyclones won nine events, with 13 of the 16 events seeing ISU among the top-two placements.
Senior Sophia Goushchina claimed the first win for the team in the 100 back. She touched the wall at 55.55, just .97 seconds off her lifetime best. Madi Dohrn followed up with a third-place finish in 56.92 seconds.
Dohrn later on went to earn a victory in the 200 back, recording a time of 2:03.53. Fallon DeWitt and Elizabeth Richardson helped build a top-three sweep for the Cyclones with DeWitt timing out at 2:04.28 and Richardson with 2:05.12.
Gabrielle LePine recorded first place in the 100 breast with a time of 1:02.89, just missing a new personal record. Behind the freshman in third place was Paige Hanley with 1:06.00. Alaina Breitbach recorded 1:07.70 for a fourth-place finish. LePine secured another win in the 200 breast, earning significant team points with a time of 2:18.60.
Freshman Ally Blumenfeld recorded her first collegiate win in the 3-meter boards with a score of 303.68. Her new personal record is a Zone-qualifying score and is the best performance of any Cyclone diver this season. Jayna Misra and Kate Mitchell tied for fourth, each posting scores of 280.65.
Another freshman, Corinne Guist, timed out at 5:00.10 in the 500 free for the top spot.
Winter Craig recorded 2:04.55 in the 200 fly to secure first place. Lucia Rizzo took second place with 2:06.23. Trinity Kay (first, 57.05), Rizzo (second, 57.24), and Craig (third, 57.50) claimed the top-three spots in the 100 fly to pick up some additional team points.
"These first initial wins with Sophia, Gabrielle, and Winter really set the tone for the rest of the meet and got the ball rolling," head coach Duane Sorenson said.
Kay, Rizzo, DeWitt, and Emily Heymans earned the top-four spots in the 200 IM. Kay picked up another win with 2:03.20, Rizzo with 2:07.70, DeWitt with 2:09.17 and Heymans with 2:09.27.
Juniors Ashley Bengtson and Brinley Horras both were just seconds behind TCU's victories in the 200 free and 1000 free events, respectively. Horras clocked a 10:16.83 at 1,000, while Bengtson finished her 200 in 1:51.90. The latter would go on to secure another second place in the 100 free in 51.87.
Blumenfeld led the Iowa State diving team again on the 1-meter boards, placing in fourth with another Zone-qualifying mark of 273.38. Joscelyn Buss took in sixth place with 263.25, Misra in seventh with 254.33, and Mitchell in eighth with 248.48.
In the 50 free, Carley Caughron (24.29), Maddie Ziegert (24.39), and Andie Quirke (24.44) claimed the 3-4-5 spots, respectively.
"Our women swam outstanding, and our divers did really well too," Sorenson said. "We came up short last week and we were able to redeem ourselves and turn it around."
