DENTON, Texas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (6-2, 1-1 Big 12) earned their second on the road win this weekend against North Texas (3-2, 0-0 Conference USA) by 178–122 on Saturday. The Cyclones won nine events, with 15 of the 16 events seeing ISU among the top-two placements.
Junior Brinley Horras set the Cyclones up with a victory in the 200 free, clocking in at 1:53.87. Lucia Rizzo claimed third spot in 1:56.07.
Gabrielle LePine picked up a win in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.70, marking her fifth win in the event this season. Paige Hanley followed with a second-place finish in 1:07.86.
Corinne Guist and Madison Rundell represented the Cyclones in the top-two of the 1000 free. Guist timed out at 10:31.13 for first place and Rundell with 10:35.41 in second place.
"Gabrielle kept up with her record in the 100 breast and Corinne really kept her stroke together to get that win," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "The freshmen did exceptionally well."
Winter Craig secured a victorious time of 2:05.96 in the 200 fly while Trinity Kay finished in third with 2:06.95. Kay earned her first victory this season in the 100 IM event with 58.35 and Lucia Rizzo recorded 59.05 for a second-place finish.
"The 100 IM is a rare event that we do, and Trinity Kay really went out there and did great," Sorenson said.
In the 200 breast, Alaina Breitbach led the team with a first-place finish of 2:25.84.
Junior Ashley Bengtson claimed a win in the 500 free, touching the wall at 5:10.77. Jasmine Weiland picked up second place with 5:15.42 and Craig in third with 5:16.60, respectively.
Jayna Misra took the top ranking on both the 3-meter and 1-meter boards while earning two Zone cuts in the process. She scored 303.60 on the 3-meter and 286.88 on the 1-meter. Kate Mitchell (fourth, 272.10) and Ally Blumenfeld (fifth, 269.10) also earned Zone cuts for their 1-meter performances.
Madi Dohrn placed in second behind UNT in the 100 back, recording a time of 57.00.
Kay (2:05.77), Fallon DeWitt (2:06.81), and Sophia Goushchina (2:08.95) took the 2-3-4 rankings in the 200 back for some team points.
Andie Quirke and Carley Caughron clocked within 0.01 seconds of each other in the 50 free. Quirke earned second place with 24.62 and Caughron in third with 24.63, respectively. Quirke found herself in another runner-up position in the 100 free with a time of 53.27. Caughron clocked in at 58.87 in the 100 fly for third place.
The Cyclones closed out the dual with the top-two spots in the 200 free relay. The team's times were 1:36.16 and 1:37.35, respectively.
"We changed up the lineups in some of the events and we were pleased with how well everyone did," Sorenson said.
ON DECK- Kansas
The Cyclones will travel to Lawrence, Kansas to compete in a two-day meet against Kansas on Friday starting at 6 p.m., and Saturday at 10 a.m.
