AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (6-2, 1-1 Big 12) will face off against Big 12 foe Kansas (3-1, 0-0 Big 12) for their final dual before the Big 12 Championships. The Jayhawks will play host at the Robinson Natatorium on Friday at 6 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.
THE OPPONENT
Iowa State and Kansas last met at the Kansas Classic in November where the Cyclones came out on top with 953 points, 46 ahead of Kansas. Last season, Iowa State fell to Kansas in the dual at Beyer Pool by a score of 180-120.
Kansas' lone dual loss this season came to No. 21 Arkansas. The two teams share common opponents in duals in South Dakota and Nebraska. Iowa State and Kansas both were victorious against South Dakota. Iowa State lost by a narrow margin to Nebraska earlier this season, whereas Kansas picked up the win.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The Cyclones have picked up major team points in the breast and fly events that have led to several victories this season. Gabrielle LePine secured victories against TCU and UNT in the 100 breast while Paige Hanley followed within the top-three spots. Alaina Breitbach notched a victory in the 200 breast against with a 2:25.84. Against TCU, Winter Craig, Lucia Rizzo, and Trinity Kay contributed to a top-three sweep of the 100 fly to clinch individual and team points.
In the diving well, more Cyclones continue to book their trips to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships, with career-bests on both 1-meter and 3-meter against TCU for Ally Blumenfeld and a new best from Kate Mitchell on 1-meter against North Texas. All four of BLumenfeld, Mitchell, Joscelyn Buss and Jayna Misra have qualifying marks for the NCAA Zone Championships on 1-meter and 3-meter this year.
ON DECK
The Cyclones will compete at the 2023 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships on Feb. 22-25 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center in Austin, Texas.
