BOSTON, Massachusetts – Iowa State opened indoor season running among an elite field at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener, while Sanele Masondo and Madelynn Hill highlighted the day with all-time program performances.
Fresh off earning All-America honors this cross country season, Masondo went out to a 5,000-meter time of 13:33.61 to now rank as the fourth-fastest performer in Iowa State history. It was Masondo's first track race as a Cyclone, while the junior broke 14 minutes for the first time of his career. Masondo finished as the 23rd-fastest collegian at the event.
Also racing in the 5,000m was Gable Sieperda who timed in at 13:47.05, less than three seconds off his indoor personal best which ranks seventh in program history. Harvard's Graham Blanks won the event while taking down the collegiate record.
In the women's 5,000m run, Hill led the way for the Cyclones nearly breaking 16 minutes with a new personal record of 16:02.33. The time tops the senior's previous indoor best by 42 seconds as Hill went on her way to notch the eighth-fastest performance in school history. Hill finished as the 35th-fastest collegian and 51st overall. The winner, Florida's Parker Valby, set the collegiate record.
Maelle Porcher clocked 16:22.74 to open her Iowa State track career, while Dana Feyen (16:28.24) and Janette Schraft (16:30.00) finished next for the Cyclones. Both Porcher and Schraft raced in the indoor 5,000m for the first time of their careers.
Next up, the Cyclones host the ISU Holiday Invite Dec. 8 and 9.
