AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (6-3, 1-2 Big 12) travels to Austin, Texas for the 2023 Big 12 Championships slated for Feb. 22-25. The Cyclones boast 12 All-Big 12 honorees and 24 Iowa State all-time top-20 performers across the events entering this season's championships.
Competition begins with time trials Wednesday at 10 a.m. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. each day with finals starting at 5 p.m. on Wednesday and 6 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Prelims and finals will be broadcasted on Big 12 Now on ESPN+.
ON THE BLOCKS
The swimmers have recorded improved and new personal times on the all-time top-performers list in 18 events this season. Fifteen new all-time top times across the 1000 free, 200 fly, 100 back, 200 back, 200 IM, 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, 200 free relay, 400 free relay and 800 free relay have been turned in while two freshmen make the record books in the 100 breast, 100 back, and 200 back for their rookie performances.
Freestyler Brinley Horras has placed top-two in the 500 free and 1000 free events nearly every dual this season while posting team-leading times of 4:53.29 and 10:01.95, respectively. The junior's mark in the 1000 is within six seconds of the school record and will have the chance of going down during the 1650 free on Saturday.
Freshman Gabrielle LePine has made a name for herself while debuting four performances on the top-performers list via the 100 and 200 breast and 200 and 400 medley relays. She's improved her season best and personal best times in the breaststroke on three different occasions this season.
The Cyclones have a pair of solid, senior veterans in Trinity Kay and Lucia Rizzo to lead them in the fly and IM events. Rizzo is a four-time All-Big 12 honoree in her Iowa State career.
The 400 free relay team consisting of members Carley Caughron, Sophia Goushchina, Horras, and Ashley Bengtson have secured 45 points and three total wins, in addition to three top-two finishes this season.
ON THE BOARDS
Keeping up with the trends from last season, for the sixth time in school history, four divers have cemented trips to the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. Jayna Misra, Joscelyn Buss, Ally Blumenfeld and Kate Mitchell each have a Zone cut on both springboards.
Blumenfeld and Mitchell became the ninth and tenth Iowa State freshmen since 2000 to achieve a Zone cut. Blumenfeld dove to a career high on the 3-meter with 303.68 and went on to notch an additional qualifying mark on the 1-meter with 273.38 at TCU. Mitchell earned her highest score on the 1-meter with 272.10 at North Texas while securing a score of 280.45 against West Virginia and UNI on 3-meter.
