AMES, Iowa – Iowa State finalized the 2023 Iowa State Classic with a school record, 11 all-time top-10 performances or improvements to standings and eight event titles.
The meet started off hot with Nehemia Too breaking the mile school record for the second week in a row with a time of 3:57.46. The time is currently in the top 20 among NCAA Division I runners.
Katarina Vlahovic took the event title in the 200-meter dash while posting the third-fastest performance in indoor program history with 24.44. Vlahovic locked down her second victory in 60-meter hurdles with a team season-best 8.21 as the Cyclones took the top seven placements.
Cebastian Gentil topped his 800-meter run personal record for the second time this season with 1:47.62 to move up to No. 4 in Iowa State history. The time currently stand as the 11th-best in the nation. Peter Smith joined in grabbing a personal record with 1:47.83 to make the move to No. 7 in ISU history while currently standing as the 14th-fastest time in the nation. Iowa State had four with times under 1:50 as Darius Kipyego clocked 1:48.46 and freshman Emanuel Galdino hit a personal record of 1:49.79.
Kaitlyn Burson made a jump up the weight throw all-time program ranks from No. 10 to No. 4 with a throw of 64-3 3/4 (19.60m). Burson hit the mark on her first throw.
On the men's side of the weight throw, Cam Jones claimed second with 69-3 1/4. Both Garret Wagner (63-0 1/4, No. 6) and Zach Verzani (61-0 1/4, No. 10) improved their mark at their respective standing on the all-time program list. Blake Wiederhold also notched a personal record with a throw of 53-4 1/4.
Jack Latham impressed in his collegiate debut, going under eight seconds in finals of 60-meter hurdles. The freshman tied the eighth-best performance in program history with 7.96 for the event win.
Running events closed with the women's 4x400-meter team turning in the sixth-best indoor performance. The team of Rachel Joseph, Zakiyah Amos, Makayla Clark and Bria Barnes combined for a time of 3:40.94.
The meet officially wrapped up with two Cyclones posting shot put personal bests to break 60 feet and improve their all-time indoor standings. Cam Jones threw 60-11 1/2 (18.58m) for first and Kevin Sakson hit a mark of 60-6 (18.44m) for second. Jones moves up to No. 4 while Sakson improved his mark to remain at No. 5 in program history.

Iowa State will send groups to the Tyson Invitational hosted by Arkansas and the Husky Classic hosted by Washington. Both events take place Feb. 10-11.
