AMES, Iowa – Iowa State splits squads Feb. 10-11 for the Husky Classic in Washington and Tyson Invite in Arkansas. The distance crew heads to the Husky Classic while hurdlers, jumpers, sprinters and middle distance runners take on the Tyson Invite.
Cyclones will compete in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter run Friday afternoon at the Husky Classic. Friday events at the Tyson Invite for ISU include the long jump, 60-meter dash, 60-meter hurdles and 400-meter dash.
Iowa State will wrap up the Husky Classic Saturday with the men's mile and women's 800-meter run. Saturday Tyson Invite events are the women's triple jump, men's 800-meter run, 200-meter dash and women's 4x400-meter relay.
Twelve men will take on the mile and 3,000-meter run, including Chad Johnson in the 3,000 who has had a dominant season climbing up the program ranks to No. 3 in both the mile and 5,000-meter run. Seven women will compete in the 3,000 and 5,000-meter events while two look to improve on their 800-meter run times. Cailie Logue holds the second-fastest 3,000-meter run time in school history and is entered in the event.
Following competition at the Iowa State Classic last week, the 800-meter run squad of Cebastian Gentil, Darius Kipyego, Peter Smith and Jason Gómez continue to hold the top spot in the nation with an average of 1:47.77. Three additional men's event squads rank in the top 10 with shot putters at No.6, milers at No. 7 and weight throwers at No. 8.
Women's hurdlers broke into the top 10 with an average 60-meter hurdle time of 8.53 while the mile, weight throw and 400-meter dash event squads rank in the top 20.
Next week, the Cyclones will again see a split weekend at the Arkansas Qualifier, Snowshoe Open and JDL DMR Invitational.
