AMES, Iowa – Paige Hanley, Emily Heymans, Madison Rundell and Maddie Ziegert have announced their return for the 2023-24 season to take advantage of their extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA.
Hanley, this season's team captain, looks to secure another top season after spending the past three years at Iowa State and her freshman season at the University of Iowa. The Orinda, California native is a top-four breaststroker on the team who is an all-time top performer in the 100 breast (No. 9) and 200 breast (No. 19). Hanley is a two-time All-Big 12 Second Team member in the 100 breast. She has also accounted for 10 top-three finishes during her Iowa State career.
Heymans, a versatile swimmer in the breast, individual medley and fly events, sets her eyes on next season after posting career-high times across two events on the all-time top performers list. She is the 13th-fastest performer in the 400 IM and is tied for the 20th top performer in the 200 IM. The Apple Valley, Minnesota native was a top-five breaststroker and 400 IM performer this season as she tallied five top-four finishes. Heymans secured 11 Big 12 Championship finals appearances in her career to land an All-Big 12 honor in the 400 IM in 2021.
Rundell, a senior from Maple Grove, Minnesota, holds top-20 times in the 1000 free and 1650 free while ranking among the all-time top performers in the 500 free, 1000 free, 1650 free and 200 breast. She swam in 18 finals at the Kansas Classic and Big 12 Championship throughout her career. Rundell picked up three runner-up placements on the season as the All-Big 12 honoree presses forward.
Ziegert, a transfer from the University of Iowa, has earned top-five status in the 50 free and 100 free among her team this season. She remains the 20th fastest swimmer in the 100 back with a personal best time of 56.56 from last season. Her contributions to her 200 free relay team marks as the ninth top time and performance in program history. Ziegert has earned 12 top-three finishes throughout her Iowa State career.
"We're excited to have four people take advantage of their COVID-19 extra year," head coach Duane Sorenson said. "A couple of them had planned to do this way back when they first started as Cyclones and couple of them decided just this last year to come back, so it's a mixed bag of the reasons why, but they're all excited and determined to finish out their Cyclone careers with a bang."
