SACRAMENTO, California – Two Cyclones became national qualifiers while three advanced to quarterfinals as the women began competition at NCAA West Preliminaries.
Sydney Willits punched her first-career ticket to nationals with her long jump mark of 21-0 3/4 (6.42m) on her first attempt to cement fourth place. The sophomore records a new personal record and moves up from ranking fifth to third in school history. Willits it the first Cyclone long jump national qualifier since Jhoanmy Luque in 2018.
Cailie Logue became the next NCAA Championships qualifier for the Cyclones, running in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:37.13. The senior assured her spot at the Championships running among the top 12 throughout the race and ran ahead in the final laps to finish sixth. Logue, a four-time All-American, will compete in the event at nationals for the second time of her career. Logue will now turn to the 5K on Saturday at 10:10 p.m. CT.
Dana Feyen finished three placements short of a trip to nationals in the 10K. The junior ended her dominant outdoor season including two All-Big 12 honors with a 10-second PR of 33:04.82. Feyen moves up a spot on the all-time program ranks to No. 9.
Kaylyn Hall made it two years in a row to qualify for 100m hurdle quarterfinals, advancing on her time of 13.39. The senior earned another run on Saturday at 8:15 p.m. CT. Katarina Vlahovic capped her Cyclone career with a 30th-place finish of 13.69.
Freshman Makayla Clark locked up her spot in 800m quarterfinals with 2:06.39 as she once again battled her way up the pack in the final stretch to solidify her automatic qualifying slot. Clark will race in quarterfinals 9:05 p.m. CT Saturday.
Zakiyah Amos was the next Cyclone to advance to quarterfinals with her run in 400m hurdles. Amos timed in at 59.07 to auto qualify, making for the fourth time this season she has broke a minute. Amos' quarterfinal will take place Saturday at 9:25 p.m. CT.
Rachel Joseph finalized 28th with 53.14 in the 400m and will race again in the 4x400m on Saturday. The freshman's PR of 52.36 ranks second in school history while owning the indoor 400m record and being a part of the indoor and outdoor 4x400m school record teams.
In the hammer throw, Kaitlyn Burson improved her mark on each of her three throws on her way to a mark of 195-11 (59.73m) to place 26th out of the top 48 in the West region.
