TAMPA, Florida – Cam Jones won the shot put with a strong mark to close day one of the USF Invite.
Jones, fresh off earning two All-America honors last week, went out to an outdoor best in the shot put with 63-2 3/4 (19.27m) to win the event. The mark moves Jones from ranking No. 6 to No. 5 in Iowa State history. Kevin Sakson took second with 59-9 1/2 (18.22m) while Blake Veenstra put up an outdoor-best 57-11 3/4 (17.67m) for fifth.
All four men's javelin throwers made their Iowa State debuts in the event including freshman Nathan Vincent who led the Cyclones with a fourth-place mark of 179-6 (54.71m). Multi-event athlete Kole Becker took fifth with 175-10 (53.59m), Clyde Hendrix sixth (168-0, 51.21m) and Johnny Sassan ninth (151-3, 46.10m).
For the women, Kailynn Gubbels moved onto the final and finalized ninth with a mark of 109-6 (33.39m). Fellow multi-event athletes Kiersten Fisher placed 14th with 95-2 (29.01m) and Amari Lain placed 17th in her event debut with 84-11 (25.89m).
In the hammer throw, Garret Wagner nearly moved onto the final out of flight one as he took 10th with 177-6 (54.12m). The women competed next with Ella O'Neall improving her personal best by nearly 10 feet with 157-9 (48.08m).
Mikey McClain won his 200m heat with a wind-aided mark of 21.09 to place seventh overall while Gus Langford placed just behind first with a wind-legal 21.61 for 29th overall.
The USF Invite continues tomorrow with events for Iowa State beginning at 10 a.m. CT.
