LAS VEGAS – Eight Cyclones punched their ticket to the semifinals Friday evening at the Cliff Keen Invitational. Iowa State owns a commanding lead in the team race with 107 points, finishing the first day 40 points in front of second-place Stanford (67).
ISU lost just three matches on day one of the CKLV and put 9-of-10 wrestlers on the podium. The Cyclones made a concerted effort to put extra points on the board with 19 bonus-point victories across both sessions, including four pins, 11 tech falls and four major decisions.
Iowa State went 8-1 in the quarterfinal round. Stevo Poulin (125), Evan Frost (133), Anthony Echemendia (141), Jacob Frost (149), Vinny Zerban (157), Isaac Dean (184), Rocky Elam (197) and Yonger Bastida (285) all advanced to the semis. Aiden Riggins won his Round of 12 match to reach the podium at 165 pounds.
No. 10 Stevo Poulin registered an unconventional win over Michigan's No. 23 Diego Sotelo in a 125-pound quarterfinal. Trailing 1-0 in the second period despite forcing most of the action, Poulin got in on a single leg and pinned Sotelo from the waterfall position to record a neutral fall.
At 133 pounds, No. 4 Evan Frost moved comfortably into the semifinals with an 11-3 major decision against West Virginia's Gunner Andrick. Frost had three takedowns and over two minutes of riding time in the win.
No. 4 Anthony Echemendia topped Utah Valley's Haiden Drury, 10-3, in a 141-pound quarterfinal. He pushed the action and recorded a takedown in all three periods.
In one of the premiere quarterfinal matchups of the night, No. 4 Jacob Frost prevailed, 4-3, over Stanford's up-and-comer No. 14 Aden Valencia at 149 pounds. Frost got an early takedown and fended off a furious late attack by Valencia to come out on top.
No. 3 Vinny Zerban rolled in his quarterfinal bout against No. 23 Jimmy Harrington of Harvard. The Cyclone tallied four takedowns in a 17-1 tech fall, his third tech fall of the day.
No. 10 Isaac Dean prevailed in another tight match in his quarterfinal against Ohio's No. 31 Sal Perrine. Dean used a first period takedown to win, 4-2.
Despite giving up the first takedown, No. 2 Rocky Elam won a comfortable 15-4 major decision over Purdue's No. 23 Ben Vanadia. Elam tallied four takedowns and nearly three minutes of riding time to move into the semifinals.
Four first period takedowns propelled No. 1 Yonger Bastida to a 21-5 tech fall over Arizona State's No. 23 David Szuba.
Aiden Riggins fell short, 5-3, in his 165-pound quarterfinal matchup against Princeton's No. 15 Ty Whalen. Riggins was in deep on a shot as time expired in the third period that would have given him a match-winning takedown but was unable to finish before the buzzer. Riggins would bounce back with a win in the Round of 12 to reach the podium at the CKLV.
MJ Gaitan was the lone Cyclone eliminated on day one. He won his first match in session two before falling in the Round of 12 to No. 13 Beau Mantanona of Michigan.
