LAS VEGAS – Nine Cyclones advanced into the Cliff Keen Invitational quarterfinals Friday afternoon at the Westgate Hotel Paradise Events Center, the most quarterfinalists of any team in the field. All 10 Iowa State entries are still alive in the tournament.
Stevo Poulin (125), Evan Frost (133), Anthony Echemendia (141), Jacob Frost (149), Vinny Zerban (157), Aiden Riggins (165), Isaac Dean (184), Rocky Elam (197) and Yonger Bastida (285) are all still on the championship side of the bracket. MJ Gaitan (174) is the lone Cyclone on the consolation side of the bracket.
ISU recorded 13 bonus-point victories in the first session, including two pins, nine tech falls and two major decisions. The Cyclones sit in first place in the team race with 38.5 points, followed by Stanford (28), Michigan (27) and Arizona State (25).
Iowa State went 7-1 in the Round of 32 to open the tournament and followed that with a 9-0 showing in the Round of 16.
After a first-round bye, Poulin recorded a tech fall to advance into the quarterfinals. Evan Frost looked strong in both of his early matches, logging a pin in the Round of 32 before narrowly missing a major decision in the Round of 16.
Echemendia tallied back-to-back tech falls in his first two matches of the tournament, outscoring his opponents 39-7.
At 149 pounds, Jacob Frost went 2-0 with two bonus-point wins in the opening session to move into the quarterfinals. He opened with a 15-0 tech fall in 1:51 thanks to a takedown and three quick tilts before an 8-1 decision in the Round of 16.
Zerban also logged back-to-back tech falls at 157 pounds to reach the quarterfinals, outscoring his opponents, 39-6. At 165 pounds, Riggins recorded a tech fall and a decision to make it six Cyclones in-a-row in the quarters.
At 184 pounds, Dean went 2-0 with a pair of decisions while, at 197 pounds, Elam needed just one victory to reach the quarterfinals after a first-round bye.
Bastida looked dominant at heavyweight with a tech fall and a pin in his first two matches.
