LUBBOCK, Texas – Iowa State ends the first day of Big 12 Indoor Championships with the men in fifth with 18 points and the women in 10th with 12 points. The men locked up eight spots in tomorrow's finals and the women secured five.
The multi-events kicked off conference with Kailynn Gubbels taking possession of her first Big 12 medal finishing sixth in the pentathlon with a new personal record of 3,983 points. The score moves her up a spot to third in Iowa State history. The junior started out by clocking a 60m hurdles personal best of 8.80 before hitting an all-time shot put best of 37-8 1/2 (11.49m). Gubbels closed with an 800m PR of 2:19.94 running at altitude.
Kaitlyn Burson scored next for the women coming in fifth in the weight throw with a mark of 65-7 3/4 (20.01m). It is Burson's third-career Big 12 medal.
Maelle Porcher medaled in the 5,000m crossing the finish line fourth running a time of 16:24.42. Porcher took hold of her third Big 12 track and field medal. For the men, Joash Ruto added a point to the team total with eighth place.
The distance medley relay ended the night with the team of Devan Kipyego, Gus Langford, Leroy Russell III and Silas Winders taking silver in 9:32.29 for eight team points.
The mile kicked off running events with Bella Heikes going 4:41.37 finishing second in her heat to auto qualify for tomorrow's final. For the men, Iowa State's No. 1 and No. 2-ranked milers also auto qualified in their heats as Emanuel Galdino finished in 4:05.46 and Devan Kipyego in 4:05.62.
Alec Carr put on a show in 60m hurdles prelims taking the last qualifying slot for the final with a new best time of 7.79 to move to No. 4 in school history.
Rachel Joseph did what Rachel Joseph does as she made 50.99 in 400m prelims look easy, breaking the indoor school record for the sixth time. Joseph clocked the fastest time in prelims by .6 seconds. The time is just off her all-time best of 50.74 set at Olympic Trials as she hit the Olympic Standard.
Dugion Blackman (1:08.99) and Aman Thornton (1:09.21) crossed first and second in their 600y heat and finished fourth and seventh overall to lock up two spots in finals. Blackman's time ranks sixth in school history and Thornton's ranks eighth.
In the women's 1,000m prelims, Riley Beach went out to the fastest qualifying time with 2:47.73 to set her up for another run tomorrow. Sheridan Wheeler just missed the final finishing ninth. For the men, Tyler Carreon finished third with 2:23.50 while Galdino, after qualifying in the mile, finished sixth to cement his place in the 1K final.
Next came the 800m, where Makayla Clark nearly hit her indoor best with 2:02.96 for second in prelims. Freshman Becca Heitzig again lowered her personal record, this time to 2:04.76 to move up to No. 4 in Iowa State history. Heitzig joined Clark in qualifying for the final with the fourth-fastest time in prelims. On the men's side, Darius Kipyego went sub-1:47 with 1:46.78 to hold the fastest time in prelims.
In the heptathlon 60m, Thai Thompson hit a best time of 6.89 while freshman Chase Lathrop went 6.94, going sub-7 seconds for the first time. The men then showed out in the high jump, with Thompson clearing 6-6 (1.98m) just 3/4 an inch off his personal best, while Lathrop topped his previous best with 6-4 3/4 (1.95m) as the duo took fourth and fifth.
After the four events in day one, Thai Thompson stands in third with 3,159 and Lathrop in eighth with 3,002.
Big 12 Championships continue tomorrow with events beginning at 10 a.m.
