AZUSA, Calif. – Iowa State began the Bryan Clay Invite fast with four top 10 program performances, including the No. 2-ranking performances in both the steeplechase and 10,000m.
Kiki Connell began the night with a four second 3,000m steeplechase PR of 10:17.80 to finish sixth out of 93 racers in the open section. Connell improves her time at No. 5 in Iowa State history.
Joash Ruto then took to the track in the fast section of the invite steeple, and fast is just how the freshman raced in his outdoor debut. Ruto clocked 8:27.22, just over a second off Gable Sieperda's 2024 school record of 8:25.92. Ruto finished third overall, and ranks fifth in the NCAA this season.
Said Mechaal and Robin Kwemoi Bera ended day one racing in the invite 10,000m late into the night, both turning in sub-28 minute times. Mechaal cut a minute off his previous best 10K time with 27:48.08, jumping right up to No. 2 in Iowa State history for his debut on the list. Bera clocked 27:56.79, now the fourth-fastest performance in program history in his track debut at the distance.
The duo placed fifth and sixth among the best distance runners in the nation, while both times rank inside the top 10 in the NCAA this season.
The Bryan Clay Invite continues tomorrow with the 5K, while the Kansas Relays begin.
