Connell Wins Steeple at Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa – Kiki Connell marked day two at Drake Relays waving the flag after winning the 3,000m steeplechase.

Connell lowered her personal best for the second time this season with 10:16.83, improving her time at No. 5 in Iowa State history. The Charles City, Iowa native is the second ISU woman to win the steeple at Drake, and first since Abby Caldwell in 2021.

Connell and Sheridan Wheeler ran alongside each other battling through the seven water jumps and 28 barriers before Connell broke away in the final lap. ISU went 1-3 with Wheeler clocking 10:21.76.

In the decathlon, all three Cyclones competing in the discus hit new personal records, and in the pole vault Cooper Spurgeon hit a personal best and Chase Lathrop cleared an outdoor best.

Lathrop finished the 10 events with a nearly 200 point personal best of 6,767 for seventh place, less than 30 points off the Iowa State top 10 performance list. Freshman Tristan Rheingans completed his first decathlon with 6,246 points for ninth.

Camryn Hubbard ran 2:09.78 in the unseeded women's 800m for an all-time personal best, and freshman Jacoby Harmon clocked 1:51.60 for an outdoor PR in the men's unseeded 800m.

Tomorrow at Drake, events start at 10 a.m. with the women's triple jump, while the first running event is the men's 4x1,600m at 10:44 a.m. Rodgers Kiplimo and Ryan Watts also run the invite 5K at the Payton Jordan Invite in Stanford, Calif. tomorrow at 11:37 p.m. CT.
