Golfers Face In-State Competition

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa ? The Iowa State men's golf team will square off against in-state opponents Drake, Iowa and Northern Iowa, at the Big Four Championship Monday at the Elmcrest Country Club. The Cyclones finished fourth at the 2005 event, finishing with a two-round score of 608, while the Bulldogs edged out the Hawkeyes by one stroke for the team title. Chris Baker placed seventh with a 148 (75-73). Tee-off times for the 36-hole event are at 8 a.m.

The Cyclones are coming off their best performance in school history, shattering the team record for a 54-hole tournament (1997 Red Raider Intercollegiate) by eight strokes at the Wolf Pack Classic in Reno, Nev., for ISU's first title since 2004. Joe Cermak (third), Rodney Hamblin (sixth) and Baker (ninth) recorded top-10 finishes as the Cyclones came back to defeat the University of Utah.

Cermak paces the team in stroke average after three events, shooting a 71.88.

In previous tournaments this season, Iowa State placed sixth at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., and tied for a runner-up finish with Nebraska at the Kansas Invitational in Lawrence.

The men are in action again Oct. 23-24 at the 49'er Collegiate Classic in Charlotte, N.C.
