AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team competed in the second day of competition at the 2006 Big 12 Championships in Columbia, Mo. After the first day of competition the Cyclones finished in sixth place with 54 points. Iowa State finished the second day in fifth place with 116 points.
The 400 medley relay team of senior Maggie Peterson, freshman Marni Benson, senior Kim Rogers and junior Lauren Breunig placed second with a time of 3:44.29, improving on Iowa State's previous season-best time of 3:54.74.
Lydia Smirniotis finished in 14th place for the Cyclones in the 500 free with a season-best time of 4:55.62. Junior Chelsey Walden also had a season-best performance by following in 19th place and touching the wall in 4:59.43
Junior Lauren Breunig finished the 200 IM in sixth place with a time of 2:01.73. This is a season-best time for the Mazomanie, Wis. native.
Cassandra Nelson, junior, placed 17th in the 50 free with a time of 24.14 while senior Jamie Wieben came in 22nd place touching the wall in 24.62.
Freshman Haley Haynes finished in seventh place on the 1-meter with 244.50 points. Cyclone diver Kali Fryklund, sophomore, finished the 1-meter competition in 20th place with 183.55 points.
The Big 12 Championships began Wednesday evening with the 200 medley relay and the 800 free relay events. The 200 medley relay team of senior Maggie Peterson, freshmen Marni Benson and Lindsay Wegner and junior Cassandra Nelson finished in fifth place with a time of 1:44.47.
The Cyclones improved on a previous time in the 800 free relay to finish in sixth place (7:25.96). The relay was made up of Breunig, senior Tami Ritchie, Walden and Peterson.
