AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State swimming and diving team finished the 2006 Big 12 Championships in sixth place with 357 points during the last day of competition in Columbia, Mo.
Senior Kim Rogers finished in seventh place in the 200 back with a time of 2:01.28 while fellow senior Maggie Peterson followed in 11th place (2:03.44). Both Rogers and Peterson had season-best times in this event.
Juniors Lauren Breunig and Cassandra Nelson placed in the 100 free. Breunig touched the wall in fourth place (49.90) and Nelson came in 20th place with a time of 52.65.
"I was very pleased with the effort of the women this week," Sorenson said. "We set a number of school records tonight (100 free and 1650 free)."
In the 1650 free senior Lydia Smirniotis finished in seventh place touching the wall in 16:49.68 and junior Chelsey Walden placed 15th with a time of 17:02.22.
Freshman Marni Benson placed 10th in the 200 breast with a time of 2:19.45 while sophomore Krista Fehl placed 16th (2:25.91).
Rogers had another impressive race in the 200 fly event. She finished in third place with a time of 2:02.00. Rogers earned all-conference for her third place performance. Fellow senior Tami Ritchie followed in eighth place (2:04.82). Both seniors had season-best times to finish their last Big 12 Championships.
The 400 free relay team of Breunig, Nelson, Ritchie and Peterson improved on the Cyclones' previous season-best time (3:34.02) to place third with a time of 3:26.52.
Freshman Haley Haynes placed sixth on the platform with 216.90 points.
"All in all, I was very pleased with our team score because this is more than we scored last year," Sorenson said.
The Cyclones will be sending freshman Haley Haynes to the NCAA Zone Diving held in Columbia, Mo. Mach 10-12. Haynes will look to qualify for the NCAA Championships held in Athens, Ga. beginning March 16. For results visit www.cyclones.com.
