AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf team shot an 866, good for a season-high fifth place finish at the Orange County National Xavier Invitational on Sunday. The Cyclones ended the day just 2-over-par and fired rounds of 291-284-291.
"I was very happy with the finish," said men's head golf coach Jay Horton.
"We followed our game plan to the tee. It was the best team effort of the season. Everybody contributed their best throughout all three rounds."
Iowa State recorded plenty of career and season lows after competing on the Crooked Cat Golf Course in Orlando, Florida.
Sophomore Joe Cermak, tied for 6th and shot career low-54 of 212. Cermak also tied his career low-round score of 70.
"(Cermak) He did a great job," said Horton.
"I'm proud of the way he played. He was solid and consistent across the whole tournament."
Sophomore Chris Baker carded a 74-71-75 for a 219 three-round final tally. John Larson (77-70-76) fired a career-low 54 score of 223 and a career low-round score of 70.
Rodney Hamblin shot a 72-81-70 = 223, and tied his career low-round score of 70. Curtis Foster finished tied for 55th and recorded a 226 final tally.
"We did a great job sticking to the plan of playing great golf," said Horton.
"Now we're focusing more on the mental side of the game. Hopefully we can continue to go out there and keep working hard."

Graham Hill of Eastern Michigan shot a third round 65, the lowest round of the tournament and finished tied for first. Hill, Andrew Landry and Justin Harding both of Lamar tallied a 208 and 8-under-par for first place. The three-way tie for first in the individuals wasn't played off due to team flight conflicts.
The Cyclones travel to Aiken, S.C, for the Cleveland Golf/Palmetto Intercollegiate March 13-14th.
