AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf team will get a chance to compete against the nation's best golfers on one of the best courses in the United States when it travels to Tulsa, Okla. to play in the 2006 Big 12 Championship, April 24-25 at the famed Southern Hills Country Club.
The Big 12 Championship makes its second appearance at Southern Hills, a venue that was recently rewarded the 2007 PGA Championship. It will be the first course to host four PGA Championships (1970, 1982, 1994, 2007) and it has hosted three U.S. Opens (1958, 1977, 2001) and a number of other national tournaments. The Perry Maxwell-designed course, the same architect as Veenker Memorial in Ames, is a par-71, 7,016-yard layout which was voted as the 15th-best golf course in the nation according to Golf Digest's "America's 100 Greatest Golf Courses."
"Southern Hills is one of the most demanding courses our guys will play in their careers," Iowa State head coach Jay Horton said. "It is well-deserving of all of the national tournaments it has hosted."
The Cyclones are fresh off a ninth-place showing at the Boilermaker Invitational and have been making steady progress throughout the spring season. Sophomores Chris Baker and Joe Cermak have posted solid tournaments. Cermak broke the school-record with 204 at Pioneer Classic to tie for third and Baker tied for 14th at the Boilermaker Invitational.
"I am always optimistic and I think we have a good chance to finish strong," Horton said. "The Big 12 is extremely tough this year. Many teams are ranked in the top-50 and three of the top-five individuals nationally are Big 12 competitors. Our strength is ball-striking. For a young team, we hit the ball extremely well. To play Southern Hills well, you have to hit the ball solid and be patient. I feel our team has made tremendous strides in both of those categories." Baker, a sophomore from Brownstown, Ind., leads the team with a 75.16 stroke average and has led the team in three of six spring tournaments. Baker proved his worth last season when he became the first Cyclone rookie to earn Big 12 all-tournament honors, placing in a tie for eighth behind a final-round 67.
"What he did last year showed he can play with anybody." Horton said. "He is slowly regaining confidence with the putter and I am excited to see how he competes next week."
Cermak, a native of Chicago, Ill., is second on the team in stroke average at 76.7. He became the first Cyclone in school history to record three sub-70 rounds (68-67-69) in a tournament en route to a third-place finish at the Pioneer Classic. Johnny Larson (So., Springfield, Minn.), Rodney Hamblin (Jr., St. Paul, Minn.) and Curtis Foster (Jr., Independence, Iowa) round out ISU's top-five competing at the Big 12 Championship.
