GUADALAJARA, Mexico-The Iowa State men's golf team concluded the first day of action Sunday at the GADO North Texas Classic at El Palomar Country Club. ISU stands in eighth place out of a 10-team field, ahead of Iowa and Arkansas-Little Rock. Cameron White flourished in his spring debut, standing in a tie for sixth after a two-round score of 148. Indiana has a six-stroke lead over Middle Tennessee State and is led by 23rd ranked sophomore Jorge Campillo who leads the medalist race.
Iowa State fired a first round score of 317 and improved with a second round tally of 300. White put himself in good position to earn his second career top-10 finish. The Plymouth, Minn., native placed seventh at the Big Four Championship.
Joe Cermak, the team's scoring average leader during the fall, carded a two-round score of 156 and stands in 31st place. Cedric Bertin opened up with a solid first day, scoring a two-round score of 153 and putting himself in a pack of four others for 22nd. Rodney Hamblin fired two rounds of 80 and is currently in a three-way tie for 38th. Johnny Larson is also in a three-way tie after a two-round total of 166 for 46th place.
Chris Baker, who earned three top-10 finishes in the fall season, withdrew from the event with a strained neck. He will compete as an individual in the final round.
Tomorrow's final round will begin at 7:30 a.m.
