Baker, Cyclones Heating Up in Arizona

GOODYEAR, Ariz. ? The Iowa State men's golf team registered its best scores of the spring season Monday at the Ron Moore Invitational at the Palm Valley Golf Club. The Cyclones shot two rounds of 289, eclipsing their spring-best score by two strokes previously held in the second round at the All-American Intercollegiate Invitational. ISU stands in 12th place out of 17 teams. Wichita State has a 12-stroke lead over host school Denver as the Shockers were 24-under par for the day. Boise State's Troy Merritt was the only player to shoot both rounds in the 60's to lead all competitors while Northern Iowa's Kyle Bermel fired a hole-in-one.
Chris Baker led the way for Iowa State, finishing in a tie for 20th with a 2-under par 142. Baker played some of his best golf of the spring with a 70 and 72. The junior earned a 69, tying ISU's fourth-lowest score in team history, at the Mission Inn Collegiate. He has a share in the Cyclones' three lowest all-time 18-hole round totals and is on pace for his fifth top-20 finish this year. The Brownsville, Ind., native ranked fourth in the event in par four scoring, averaging 3.90 shots and going 2-under par.
Joe Cermak is trailing Baker and nine others by one stroke in a tie for 30th. Cermak finished Monday strong, scoring a 69 to tie ISU's second-best individual effort this spring. The junior tied for sixth-best in the field in par five scoring, recording a 6-under par total and averaging 4.25 strokes.
Cedric Bertin and Rodney Hamblin finished first-day action in a tie for 47th. Bertin continued his strong spring play, tying his spring-best score with a 70 in the first round. The senior Hamblin was competing individually as Johnny Larson got the start.
Freshman Cameron White is tied for 63rd after carding a two-round total of 148 and Larson, competing in his second event this spring, stands in 96th.
The final round will be completed tomorrow morning. ISU will be in Turlock, Calif., for the Stevinson Ranch Invitational March 26-27.
