BINTAN, Indonesia ? Jason Knutzon, one of the most highly-decorated golfers in Iowa State history, continued his success overseas on the professional Asian Tour last weekend, winning his second career title at the Motorola International Bintan. Knutzon registered a four-round total of 274, including a final round 6-under par 66 to defeat Australia's Peter Fowler by one stroke. The Eagle Grove, Iowa, native began the final round two shots behind overnight leader Rick Gibson of Canada. His other Asian Tour victory came at the Macau Open in 2004.
Knutzon left a lasting impression on the Cyclone golf program, setting the season-low stroke average record in the 1996-97 campaign with a 72.71 mark. He led ISU in scoring three years and his senior year was capped off with first-place performances at the 17-team Red Raider Intercollegiate and the Drake Relays Invitational. He finished his last season by placing among the top-six competitors in nine of 12 events.
Since turning pro in 1999, Knutzon debuted on the Asian Tour in 2003 where he earned three top-10 finishes. Knutzon followed up with three more top-10 performances in 2004 and finished tied for seventh in the Thailand Open, fourth in the Macau Open and seventh in the season-ending Volvo Masters of Asia in 2006. He qualified for the 2003 U.S. Open at Olympia Fields in Chicago during the summer of 2003.
