Ashley Brown of Kansas won the 100-meter hurdle crown in 13.27 seconds. Williams, the Big 12 indoor 60-meter hurdles champion, was second in 13.37. Freshman Jenna Caffrey earned fifth-place with a time of 13.66 seconds. The
“Rebecca has had a very good senior season and it was great for her to finish in the top two today,” said sprints and hurdles coach Scott Roberts. “I am very proud of all of her accomplishments. Anything I was to say about Rebecca would be an understatement.”
After winning the 10,000-meter title on Friday night, Iowa State's Lisa Koll earned a fourth-place finish in the 5,000-meter run Sunday.The freshman tailed NCAA champion Sally Kipyego of Texas Tech through the first seven laps before Kipyego pulled away from the entire pack. Koll finished in 17:02.40. The
Seniors Agata Kosuda and Priya Hoze finished fifth and ninth, respectively in the triple jump. Kosuda roped a fifth-place finish with an effort of 43-3. Hoze finished just outside of scoring contention, with a career-best jump of 41-8 ?.
Teamwork led to the first Cyclone points of the day. The 4x100-meter relay team of Lashawn Wright, Caffrey, Leia Jackson and Williams placed sixth in 46.14. Later on, it was a tight race for Jenny Mockler in the 800-meter run, who placed fourth in 2:10.39.
“I thought our kids performed very well over the three-day event,” said head coach Dick Lee. “They ran their hearts out and I am very proud of everyone's effort. We have a very special group of seniors that will be leaving us shortly and we are going to miss them. They have all been great leaders on and off the track. We will take a few days this week to rest up for regionals and then work hard to get our women qualified for the NCAA national meet.”
For five Iowa State seniors, the climax of the season is yet to come. Williams, Hoze, Kosuda, Mockler and Sara Boisen will compete in the NCAA Regional, along with Koll and Caffrey.
