AMES, Iowa- Iowa State junior golfer Ben Herrera continues his solid play this summer, earning a spot in the 2008 United States Amateur, Aug. 18-24 at Pinehurst No. 2 and No. 4 in Pinehurst, N.C.
Herrera, a native of Urbandale, Iowa, punched his ticket to the prestigious event by finishing second at a sectional qualifier at the Harvester Golf Club in Rhodes, Iowa. Herrera fired rounds of 70 and 69 (139) to finish four strokes behind of Mike McCoy, whose son, Nate, will be freshman on the ISU golf team in the fall.
Herrera, who won the Iowa Masters title in July, was second on the team in stroke average last season, averaging 73.45 strokes per round. All U.S. Amateur competitors will play 36 holes of stroke play. The top 64 scores advance to the match play portion of the event.
