AMES, Iowa- Iowa State senior Ben Herrera is having a breakout season for the Cyclones, as the team wrapped up their fall season last weekend.
The Urbandale, Iowa native has been the rock-solid leader for the Cyclones throughout their five fall events, leading the team with a 71.53 stroke average, which is on pace to break Chris Baker's single-season stroke average mark set in 2008.
Herrera finished in the top-11 in all five meets, including a fourth-place showing at the Memphis Intercollegiate.
The most impressive note of Herrera's fall season is his extraordinary finishes. The Cyclone never shot in the 70s in the final round of all five fall tournaments, posting scores in the 60s in the final 18 holes of every tournament, including a pair of 67s. His stroke average in the final round is an amazing 68.0. According to golfstat.com, that average ranks second nationally among 6,650 collegiate golfers.
“Ben's mindset is to win,” ISU head coach Jay Horton said. “He expects to win and expects to lead this team. As a golfer, how you think mentally is half the battle. It is a state of mind where Ben sees nothing but good things happening to him on the course.”
Herrera's outstanding season has already garnered him some national attention and helped put the Cyclones in position to receive their first NCAA postseason berth since 1999. He currently ranks 64th nationally in the Golfstat individual rankings.
