AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State men's golf team and head coach Jay Horton added Borja Virto to the team for the spring semester. Virto, who is ranked as Spain's eighth-best amateur, attended Usulinas de Jesus High School in Gorraiz, Spain and competed for three years on the Spanish U-18 national boy's team.
Virto represented Spain in the 2008 and 2009 European Boy's Team Championship, leading the team to a fourth-place finish in 2009. Virto's international experience will aid him in his transition to the Cyclone squad, where Horton hopes he will make an immediate impact.
“We are very excited to have a player like Borja join our team here at Iowa State,” Horton said. “He has been a fixture on his national team for quite some time and has a wealth of experience competing at a very high level. He comes from a very talented Spanish national team and I think he will be a great addition to what I believe is an already very talented Cyclone golf team.”
Virto joins Jacob Aahlom and Mads Herskind of Denmark as Horton's third overseas sign in the past year. The Cyclones will hit the links to open their spring season at the UTSA Roadrunner Invitational in San Antonio, Texas on Feb. 15.
