AMES, Iowa - A pair of former Iowa State men's golfers have earned their tour cards for the 2011 season on two prominent professional tours in Jason Knutzon and Chris Baker.
Knutzon, who competed on the Cyclone golf team from 1995-99, solidified his card on the European PGA Tour by finishing 15th at qualifying school. Knutzon has been a successful member of the Asian Tour since 2002, winning two tournaments (2004 Macau Open; 2007 Motorola International Bintan in Indonesia). He plans on playing 25 events on both the European and Asian Tours.
A native of Eagle Grove, Iowa, Knutzon held the school's single-season stroke average mark at 72.71 for 11 years until it was eclipsed by Baker in 2007-08. Knutzon, who won four tournaments as a Cyclone and was a First-Team All-Big 12 pick in 1997, qualified for the 2003 United States Open at Olympia Fields in Chicago.
Baker secured his card on the 2011 Nationwide Tour after his second year as a professional. Baker won his second professional event in 2010 at the European Challenge Tour in Morocco. He capped off the year by advancing to the final stage of the 2010 PGA Tour Qualifying School.
Baker ended his Iowa State career in 2008 by setting the school's single-season stroke average record (71.66), advancing to the NCAA Regional as an individual and earning unanimous First-Team All-Big 12 accolades. A native of Brownstown, Ind., Baker still owns the school's 18-hole scoring record at 64 and was named Iowa State's Male Athlete of the Year in 2008.
