Bridgestone Golf Collegiate

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Iowa State men's golf team ended its fall season by winning the 15-team Bridgestone Collegiate this afternoon. The Cyclones were tied for sixth heading into the final round, but moved all the way into the top spot with a 3-under 285 today, five shots better than any other team in the field. Iowa State won the team title by five strokes (582) over North Carolina State.
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes due to inclement weather yesterday morning.
The tournament victory for the Cyclones was their first since winning the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational on Sept. 9, 2007, ending a streak of 50 tournament starts (six or more teams) without a win. Iowa State finished fourth or better in its final four fall tournaments.
It was a total team effort for the Cyclones, as three golfers posted under par rounds this afternoon (Scott Fernandez- 70, Nate McCoy-70 and Sam Daley-71). Daley, a true freshman from Wynnum, Australia, recorded his best start of his young career by tying for third place with identical rounds of 71 (142). McCoy catapulted his way into a tie for 12th place with his 70 today (146), while Fernandez leaped into a tie for 15th at 147.
"We played very well today," Iowa State head men's golf coach Andrew Tank said. "All five guys contributed, which I was glad to see. Yesterday, our top two players struggled, but the rest of the team kept us together. Sam, Blake (Waller) and Duncan (Croudis) kept us in the tournament. Today, Nate and Scott played great and that was the difference. Sam really stepped it up again this week and showed he can play with the best players in the country. He just keeps getting better."
The Cyclones will take a 3 ½ month break before beginning their spring season in February. Iowa State was ranked 51st nationally by Golfstat heading into this weekend's tournament, and with the victory, has an outstanding shot to break into the top-40.
"The steady improvement we've made and being in contention in all of these tournaments will help us," Tank said. "We all wanted to win so bad and put an exclamation point on the fall season. I am very proud of this team. This will be something I will cherish for a long time."
