CHONBURI, Thailand - Former Iowa State golfer Jason Knutzon earned a spot at the 2011 Open Championship at Royal St. George's in July after advancing through the International Final Qualifier in Asia on Friday.
Knutzon finished fourth in the qualifier, firing rounds of 69-67 (136) to have the right to participate in golf's most prestigious event for the first time in his career. Knutzon had to wait to see if he made the fourth and final spot, as overnight leader Kodai Ichihara had a chance to force a play-off, but missed a short birdie putt on the final hole.
"I'm really excited," Knutzon said. "I've not played much over there and I'm looking forward to this one. It'll be fun. I have not played in the British Open before. I am surprised I got through as I was using this as a practice week but a few things clicked."
Knutzon is in the midst of an outstanding professional career after graduating from Iowa State in 1999. He has been a stalwart on the Asian Tour in the past decade, winning two tournament titles. Knutzon became the second Cyclone to play in a U.S. Open in 2003 at Olympia Fields in Chicago, Ill.
Knutzon, a native of Eagle Grove, Iowa, was a standout golfer at Iowa State from 1995-99, earning All-Big 12 honors and helping the Cyclones qualify to multiple NCAA Regional appearances.
