NOTES/STATS
AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf team has already begun preparation for the 2011 Big 12 Men's Golf Championships, April 25-27 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
First-year head coach
Andrew Tank has seen many positives this season, as six different Cyclones have garnered top-10 performances throughout the 2010-11 campaign. The Cyclone-five will get a chance to play on one of the best courses in the Midwest in Prairie Dunes. The challenging par-72, 7,480-yard layout has hosted numerous USGA national championships, including the 2002 U.S. Women's Open Championship.
This year's tournament marks the 10th time the Big 12 has conducted its men's golf championship at the historic course, which is lined with native Kansas prairie grass and will offer all players in the field an extreme test.
"I am really looking forward to seeing our guys play on a great golf course," Tank said. "It's going to be a real test and a true championship at 72 holes. It will be nice to see where we compare to the rest of the conference."
Iowa State will have some course familiarity heading into the tournament. Four current Cyclones competed at the 2009 Big 12 Championships held at Prairie Dunes, including senior
Nathan Leary, who led Iowa State with a tie for 29th (76-73-76-76=301). Juniors
Nate McCoy,
Tom Lathrop and
Michael Wuertz also participated in the 2009 Big 12 Championships as true freshmen.
The competition for next week's title will be tougher than ever. No. 1 Oklahoma State is the prohibitive favorite to win the conference championship with three golfers ranked in the top-15 of Golfweek's individual rankings. The Cowboys boast the top-ranked collegiate golfer in the nation in Peter Uihlein, who just two weeks ago was teeing it up at The Masters.
A total of five Big 12 schools are ranked in the top-30 nationally (No. 6 Texas A&M, No. 11 Texas, No. 15 Texas Tech, No. 26 Oklahoma), as the league continues to rank as one of the best conference alliances nationally.
"Playing against the best in the Big 12 was one of the reasons I was attracted to this job and it's why our players chose to come to Iowa State," Tank said.
"There will be a comfort level because we have some experience playing there," Tank added. "We have guys who have been there before and know what to expect. I want to make sure our guys don't treat this tournament as anything different than the other tournaments. We try to prepare our best each week and this is another exciting event to look forward to."
McCoy, a native of West Des Moines, currently leads the team in stroke average at 73.62 and has been one of the Cyclones' top performers the last three seasons. The junior is the only Cyclone to play in all 11 tournaments and has a team-high three top-10 efforts this year, including winning medalist honors at the VCU Shootout.
Tank has been pleased with the progress of sophomore
Borja Virto during the spring season. A native of Gorraiz, Spain, Virto has finished in the top-30 in his last five events, including a top-10 showing at the Hawkeye Invitational on Sunday. Virto is averaging 73.94 strokes per round in the spring.
"I have been very pleased with Borja and his play," Tank said. "He has put up a lot of consistent numbers. I think he has shown steady progress throughout the year. He played really well for us last weekend and had a chance to finish close to the top."
Leary, Wuertz and Lathrop will join McCoy and Virto in the lineup next week.
