AMES, Iowa - Seeing
Nate McCoy's name at the top of golf leaderboards is an annual summer event. The soon-to-be Iowa State senior golfer has already kept that trend going with his strong play at the start of another busy summer for the West Des Moines native.
For the second year in a row, McCoy won a U.S. Open local qualifier to advance to the sectional qualifying stage for the U.S. Open. McCoy won his local qualifier by three shots, firing a 69 at Crow Valley in Davenport on May 9. McCoy will try to reach his dream of competing with the world's best at the U.S. Open on Monday, traveling to Summit, N.J., for the U.S. Open sectional qualifier at the Canoe Brook Country Club.
The top four individuals at the sectional meet will compete in the 111th U.S. Open, June 16-19 at the Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md. Only two Cyclones have ever competed in the U.S. Open (Max Hall- 1949 at Medinah; Jason Knutzon- 2003 at Olympia Fields).
McCoy recently sat down with cyclones.com to talk about his busy summer.
Besides the U.S. Open sectional, what other tournaments are competing in?
"I am going to the sectional next week and then straight to the Sunnehanna Amateur in Pennsylvania. I will return for Iowa State golf camp, and then hopefully the U.S. Open. I will then head to the Northeast Amateur in Rhode Island. I am also planning on playing in the Trans-Mississippi (Kansas City) and the Porter Cup (Lewiston, N.Y.). Most of these are national tournaments."
How excited are you about playing in the U.S. Open sectional?
"I am really excited. Last year I was a little nervous with the prospect of playing in the U.S. Open in front of me. This year I will have more maturity with it and approach it like another golf round. I am at a qualifier with four spots instead of one like last year."
How much confidence can you gain by playing in all of these national tournaments?
"It can help me a lot in gaining confidence, knowing that you have to play well out there. You have to play at your highest level and that helps you gain more confidence. If I can play well at the sectional and do the right things, that will help me out a great deal."
Will you know any other players at the Sectional qualifier?
"There will be some guys I know up there from other schools. It will be nice to have some familiar faces around. It will give me a little more comfort."
