AMES, Iowa- Iowa State head men's golf coach
Andrew Tank announce today that
Zach Steffen, a member of Indian Hills' 2011 NJCAA national championship team, has signed a letter of intent to play golf at Iowa State in 2011-12.
A native of Des Moines, Steffen will be a sophomore next season.
"We are thrilled to have Zach join the Cyclone golf family," Tank said. "He is a talented player and will do great things on the golf course and in the classroom."
Steffen was a key contributor on IHCC's national championship season, helping the Indians become the first "Northern" school to win the NJCAA D-1 crown. Steffen placed 20th as an individual at the national tournament and ended the season with a 75.2 stroke average. He had five top-five finishes, including a third-place showing at the NJCAA District III Championship.
Steffen prepped at Des Moines Lincoln where he was a two-time all-state selection for the Railsplitters. He tied for first at the 2008 Iowa Class 4A state tournament as a junior and tied for sixth at the state meet in his senior season (2009).
Steffen has had an outstanding summer competing in statewide amateur events in Iowa. He made the semifinals of the Iowa Golf Association Match Play Championship and finished fourth at the Iowa Masters and Ottumwa Amateur.
