ATLANTA, Ga.- Iowa State senior golfer Nate McCoy is having an outstanding summer. It got even better on Saturday when the West Des Moines, Iowa native won the prestigious Dogwood Invitational, one of the nation's most revered amateur events.
McCoy fired a four-day, 22-under 266 total, including a final-round 65 to hold off second-place finisher Bobby Wyatt of Illinois by two shots (20-under) at the Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta. The tournament featured many of the top collegiate amateurs in the nation, including All-American Vince India from Iowa, who tied for eighth at 275.
"This was my first big win and one of my best finishes ever," said McCoy, who was playing in his third Dogwood. "This is kind of a surreal experience. I didn't think I would be in this position."
McCoy, who led Iowa State in stroke average last season, came ever so close to earning a spot at U.S. Open last month. In a sectional qualifier at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, N.J., McCoy finished one shot away from a berth at the U.S. Open, tying for fifth in the 83-player field.
McCoy won his first collegiate tournament in the Fall of 2010 at the VCU Shootout.
