AMES, Iowa-
Nate McCoy is sure to be a name mentioned when talking about Iowa State's men's golf team. A senior from West Des Moines, Iowa, McCoy is a three-year starter for the Cyclones and is poised to make a historic final run with Iowa State.
This summer was McCoy's best on the links and arguably the most outstanding for a Cyclone. He never lost a single tournament or meet in the entire state of Iowa. He took the medal in the Iowa Golf Association state four-ball, the Iowa Masters and the Herman Sani Invitational to help him earn IGA Player of the Year honors.
McCoy also competed out of state against some of the nation's best. He took home the trophy at the prestigious Dogwood Invitational in Atlanta, Ga., at 22-under par. The Dogwood Invitational is one of the nation's best summer amateur events and he out-placed over 20 amateurs ranked by Golfweek in the top 200 in the world. He also tied for 15th at The Porter Cup and placed 18th at the Northeast Amateur, two more upper echelon amateur golf tournaments. He just missed earning a spot at the U.S. Open, finishing fifth at a U.S. Open sectional qualifier in New Jersey.
McCoy has more than just bragging rights. Currently, he is ranked 56th in the world according to Golfweek's Amateur World Rankings. He has a 23-place lead on his father Mike, who is one of the most accomplished amateur golfers in Iowa.
Last year his big victory came at the VCU Shootout in Richmond, Va., shooting 8-under par (208), his career low. He led the squad in stroke average (74.1) and posted three top-five finishes. His career 73.9 scoring average has landed him in the third spot in career scoring average leaders since 1990 with the Cyclones.
"Nate's performance this summer speaks for itself," Head Coach
Andrew Tank said. "We're really excited about what Nate can accomplish this year."
