RICHMOND, Va. - The Iowa State men's golf team is currently in fourth place (564) after two rounds at the VCU Shootout. No. 22 Virginia is in first place at 559, just four shots ahead of Iowa State. The Cyclones shot a 280 in the first round, tying for the 15th-best 18-hole team score in school history.
The story of the first day for the Cyclones was the outstanding performance of freshman Scott Fernandez. Fernandez currently leads the medalist race at 135 after carding rounds of 66-69 (9-under). Fernandez recorded a pair of eagles in the first round to help him fire a 6-under 66, which ties him for the school record for the lowest round under par (a Cyclone has been 6-under 14 times in school history).
Fernandez is one shot ahead of Virginia's Denny McCarthy (136) and two shots ahead of Harold Varner of East Carolina (137).
Iowa State also had a strong first day from Sam Daley and Zach Steffen, who are currently in a tie for 14th and 18th, respectively. Daley shot rounds of 70-72 for a 142 total.
