Iowa State

Virginia Commonwealth Shootout

09.27.2011 | Men's Golf
RICHMOND, Va. - For the second year in a row, an Iowa State golfer claimed medalist honors at the VCU Shootout. Cyclone freshman Scott Fernandez answered Nate McCoy's victory last season by winning the individual crown by a shot (205) to help the Iowa State men's golf team place fourth (854) as a team in Richmond, Va., this afternoon. No. 22 Virginia placed first at 837. ISU's 854 tally ties for the eighth-best 54-hole score in school history.
Fernandez, a native of Granada, Spain, birdied the final two holes for a 2-under 70 this afternoon to help him sneak past Adam Stephenson (East Carolina) by one shot at 11-under (66-69-70=205). Fernandez' 205 score ties for the second-best 54-hole total in school history, one stroke shy from the school-record 204 set by Joe Cermak in 2006.
"He (Fernandez) seemed relax and focused today," Iowa State head coach Andrew Tank said. "I don't think he had his best stuff today, but he played smart and was patient. He made birdies when he needed it the most. He just kept giving himself chances and he capitalized on the last two holes."
Fernandez' 6-under 66 in the first round tied the school record for lowest 18-hole round in relation to par- it was the 14th time a Cyclone was 6-under in 18 holes- and he became the first Cyclone freshman to win a tournament since Drew Dalziel did it in 2002. Dalziel carded a 205 to win the 2002 Nestle Purina Classic (St. Louis, Mo.), as Fernandez joins Dalziel with the lowest 54-hole tournament score ever by a Cyclone rookie.
Tank was impressed by his rookie's performance in day one.
"On the first day, he's making eagles (three) and was 9-under through 24 holes," Tank said. "He played really well. It is exciting to have him win in such a strong field in just his second event. It says a lot about his future as a Cyclone."
Another Cyclone freshman, Sam Daley, had a solid tournament. Daley tied for 28th at 217, carding rounds of 70-72-75. McCoy, the defending medalist, fired a 71 this afternoon to help him move up into a tie for 34th at 218.
"I am really pleased with how our team did," Tank added. "It is good to see us in contention. With 18 holes to go, we were only five shots out of the lead. We will learn from this and hopefully we will be in this position again. I am really happy to see the improvement that was made from the first tournament."
The Cyclones will make their next appearance, Oct. 3-4 at the Rees Jones Invitational in Dafuskie Island, S.C.
