MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- The Iowa State swimming and diving team (0-1, 0-0 Big 12) put up strong competition against Minnesota (2-0, 1-0 Big 10) in their first dual meet of the season. In the end, the Cyclones fell 144-140 Friday evening at the University Aquatic Center. The Cyclones drop to 0-1 in dual meets for the season.

“I thought that we raced really well,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “We saw that we had a number of weaknesses, which we always find when we swim against a great caliber team, so we have areas that we need to improve on to make ourselves a lot faster.”

The Cyclones saw excitement in the diving well with freshman Elyse Brouillette recording an NCAA Zone Diving Qualifying score of 289.50, earning Brouillette a trip to the Zone Diving Championships in March in Houston, Texas.

“I think there were some highlights at this meet,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “Especially with Elyse qualifying on the 3-meter board.”

Also on the 3-meter board for the Cyclones was Jessica Henderson, who finished in second with a score of 263.85. Megan Cohea took third with a score of 232.43.

Brouillette also led the Cyclones with a fourth-place finish and score of 249.82 on the 1-meter board. Cohea finished in fourth with a score of 221.40, Marley Dobyns (179.32) was fifth, and Henderson took sixth with a score of 236.70.

“There were a lot of ups and downs along with little things we need to continue to work on,” Warrick said. “I am very happy with the meet overall, with it being our first meet and it being against strong competitors.”

Amanda Paulson earned the Cyclones their first event win of the night in the 50 freestyle out-touching reigning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week Tess Behrens. Paulson finished with a time of 23.83.

“Amanda did outstanding. She came back to the pool where she was a high school All-American and state champion,” Sorenson said. “It was great to see her winning in the 50 freestyle as well as her having a solid 100 freestyle.”

The Cyclones took second and third in the 100 freestyle event, with Paulson clocking in with a time of 52.97 and Katie Vollhaber taking third with a time of 53.07 respectively.

Bre Loeschke continued to show promise in the 100 backstroke, with a second place finish and time of 58.10. Dani Harris picked up a fourth place finish with a time of 59.46.

“Bre finished the last leg of the 100 backstroke with a lot of speed,” Sorenson stated. “We were really excited about that.”

In the 200 backstroke, freshman Marissa Engel finished in third place with a time of 2:07.47.

“We just need to pay attention to detail,” Sorenson noted about the meet. “We were just sloppy on our turns, and we need to be more aggressive on our turns. Swimming-wise, we swam with Minnesota but turns and being aggressive off the wall is an area we need to work on.”

The Cyclones return home next Saturday, Oct. 20, in a dual against South Dakota State. The meet begins at 6 p.m. CDT at Beyer Pool and admission is free.
