AMES, Iowa - Iowa State sophomore golfer
Scott Fernandez has played in only 15 tournaments in his collegiate career. What he's done in those 15 is remarkable, arguably posting the finest start in the history of Iowa State golf.
A native of Granada, Spain, Fernandez already has eight top-10 individual finishes in his young career, including three medalist or runner-up showings (1st- 2011 VCU Shootout; 2nd- 2012 Northern Intercollegiate; 2nd- 2012 VCU Shootout). His pair of runner-up finishes occurred in the first two tournaments of the 2012-13 campaign.
His fast start has been the catalyst to Iowa State's success so far this season, but the Cyclones will have to see what life will be like without Fernandez in their lineup the next two tournaments. That's because Fernandez will be one of three amateurs representing Spain at the 2012 World Amateur, Oct. 4-7 in Antalya, Turkey.
The World Amateur is annually one of the most prestigious amateur events conducted. Spain is one of 72 countries competing, which will include a contingent from the United States. The U.S. squad is an all-star team, including United States Amateur champion Steve Fox (Chattanooga), the 2012 Haskins Award winner Justin Thomas (Alabama) and
Chris Williams (Washington), the world's top-ranked amateur.
"It's a fantastic achievement to be invited to play and represent your home country," Iowa State head golf coach
Andrew Tank said. "For a lot of countries, this is one of the highest honors you can receive. It's has been great to see Scott off to such a great start. He has put himself in contention to win both tournaments, and he would be the first to tell you he's disappointed he didn't pull out a win. He still has a lot of improving to do and when it is all said and done he will win his share of tournaments."
Fernandez is following up his record-setting rookie season where he established the school mark for best stroke average by a freshman at 73.18. His stroke average last year is the eighth-best clip in school history, and he posted six top-10 finishes to help lead the Cyclones back into NCAA postseason play for the first time since 1999.
Fernandez, who left last week to begin preparation for the World Amateur, is excited about the opportunity to play in amateur golf's grandest stage. He sat down with Cyclones.tv before he left to talk about his fast start and the World Amateur.
