Cyclones Tied For Fourth at Firestone Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Iowa State men's golf team is tied for fourth after the first round of the Firestone Invitational this afternoon. The Cyclones carded a 290, eight shots behind first-place Ball State (282).
The Cyclones were led by Sam Daley and Zach Steffen, who are currently tied for 16th after carding a pair of 72s. Blake Waller and Collin Foster are both in a tie for 21st with first-round 73s.
Matt Atkins of USC-Aiken and Tyler Merkel of Ball State are the leaders in the medalist race at 4-under (68).
Iowa State is playing without its top golfer, Scott Fernandez, for the second consecutive tournament. Fernandez tied for 13th as an individual at the World Amateur on Sunday, helping his Spanish team tie for ninth as a team.
The tournament has been shortened to 36 holes and teams will wrap up play tomorrow with the final 18 holes.
