MASON CITY, Iowa - Iowa State took home four titles at Saturday's Kaye Young Open. Freshmen Kyle Larson (133), freshmen Gabe Moreno (149), freshmen Lelund Weatherspoon (165), and redshirt freshmen Tyler Swope (HWT) all took home titles at their respective weight classes.
Swope pinned his way through five matches en route to the title at heavyweight. The Davenport, Iowa native pinned Picasso Ambroise of NIACC (0:00), Ryan DeWitt of Waldorf (3:00), Alex Stockton (4:43) and Josh Lambrecht of Ellsworth Community College (3:47) in his first four matches of the day. The championship match at heavyweight featured Swope and fellow Cyclone Joe Scanlan. Swope defeated his teammate with a pin 3:57 into the match.
Kyle Larson went 4-0 on the day to win the title at 133. He defeated Kamsa Thephavong of Buena Vista (pin 2:08), Raymond McQueen of Waldorf (TF 19-4), Khadeem Stanton of Ellsworth Community College (dec. 7-1) and Joao Vincente of William Penn (dec. 13-7) en route to his first place finish.
Highly touted freshmen Gabe Moreno of Urbandale recorded three pins on the day as he went 4-0 and won the title at 149. Moreno pinned Justin Van Est of William Penn (1:57), Martin Lopez of Waldorf (1:24) and Pat Baruth of Waldorf (1:36) in his first three matches. The championship match at 149 featured Moreno and fellow Cyclone, sophomore Luke Swalla. Moreno scored a 4-1 decision over Swalla to win the title at 149.
Lelund Weatherspoon was the fourth Iowa State champion of the day. The Jackson, Mich. native went 4-0 en route to the title at 165. In his first two matches of the day, he defeated Gabe Vasquez of Waldorf 19-5 and pinned Blake Campbell two minutes into the match. In the semi-finals, Weatherspoon defeated teammate and fellow freshman Max Krieger by way of a 4-2 decision. In the 165 final, Weatherspoon pinned Ishmael Rempson of William Penn 1:47 into the match.
15 Cyclones competed in all at this year's Kaye Young Open. Redshirt sophomore Scott Moody (141), redshirt junior Tyler Christensen (184), Ben Perna (197) and Tyler Swope (HWT) were the only Cyclones competing attached for Iowa State.
Perna (197) and freshmen Adam Knier (184) were both forced to injury default in their championship matches. Christensen finished third at 184 and freshman Drake Swarm also finished third at 125.
Iowa State will take to the mats at Hilton Coliseum for the first time this season Saturday at the Harold Nichols Cyclone Open. Action starts at 9 a.m. with the doors opening one hour prior to the event.
