AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of the season with a strong performance at the Bridgestone Collegiate, tying for third.
Iowa State placed in the top five as a team twice during the fall. The team finished fifth at the VCU Shootout (Sept. 24-25) and recorded its best finish of the year at the Bridgestone Collegiate (Oct. 27-28) by placing third. The Cyclones improved throughout the season, ending fall competition by carding an 866 at Bridgestone. The 866 earned the team a spot in the Cyclone record books, marking one of the lowest 54-hole scores in program history.
The Cyclones have shown strong depth thus far, with four different golfers recording top-15 individual performances. The fall season was headlined by three sophomore golfers who notched the six highest individual finishes on the season. Iowa State men's golf coach Andrew Tank sees great potential in the group and believes good things are to come during the spring season.
"It's great having multiple players who can come out and give you a performance like that." Tank said. "We need to work on making those results more consistent during the spring and try to get our guys to perform like that at the same time."
Scott Fernandez' start to the season ranks as one of the greatest in school history. The sophomore competed in three tournaments this fall and finished in the top three in all of them. Fernandez was runner-up at the Northern Intercollegiate and the VCU Shootout, and tied for third at the Bridgestone Collegiate.
Fernandez' torrid start hasn't gone unnoticed. Both Golfweek and Golfstat have him ranked as the 11th-best player in the nation, the highest ranking ever by a Cyclone linkster.
The Granada, Spain native missed two tournaments while competing for Spain in the World Amateur, where he tied for 13th individually. If his production continues, he could earn himself a spot on Iowa State's single season all-time record list for a season stroke average. Fernandez currently holds a team-best 71.67 stroke average. He has finished in the top-10 in nine of 16 career tournaments at Iowa State.
Sam Daley competed in all five tournaments for the Cyclones, compiling a 76.21 average. Daley placed in the top-15 at two tournaments, tying for 12th at the Firestone Invitational and tying for 14th at the VCU Shootout.
Blake Waller ended the fall on high point, recording a career-low 217 at the Bridgestone Collegiate. Waller finished ninth individually, his first career top-10 finish, wrapping up the fall with a 76.55 stroke average.
Senior Borja Virto also worked his way to a top-15 finish this season. Virto tied for 15th at the Rees Jones Invitational, where he fired a season-low 227. The Gorraiz, Spain native competed in four tournaments for the Cyclones, accruing a 77.00 fall stroke average.
Redshirt freshman Collin Foster provided some rather unexpected support for the Cyclones. Foster saw the first action of his Cyclone career at the VCU Shootout, shooting a 233. He then followed up his debut with a 228 (tying for 18th) at the Rees Jones Invitational. Foster played in four tournaments in the fall and produced a 76.00 stroke average.
Tank looks to keep the intensity high during the offseason.
"I think last year we lowered our expectations during the winter because we didn't finish as well as we wanted to in the fall," Tank said. "This season it's my job to stay on our guys to continue to build off of what we accomplished this fall."
Iowa State will return to competition on February 11, as the team travels to San Antonio, Texas for the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational.
