AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf team will open its spring season at the San Antonio Invitational, Feb. 13-14. The squad is looking to build on its success from the fall season where it placed fourth or better in its final four tournaments.
Iowa State hasn't made a NCAA Regional appearance since 1999, but the Cyclones ended the fall season ranked 42nd nationally by Golfstat and positioned themselves in line for a spot in the postseason.
Iowa State had an outstanding fall campaign. The Cyclones won the Bridgestone Collegiate by five shots, their first team victory since 2007, and had two individuals win medalist honors.
Senior Nate McCoy was the team leader with three top-10 finishes. He captured his second career medalist title at the Rees Jones Invite, winning by nine shots. He currently ranks third in the Cyclone record books for career stroke average (73.58), boasting a 71.36 scoring average in the fall season, which is on pace to set the single-season school mark. He heads into the spring season ranked 91st nationally by Golfweek.
True Freshman Scott Fernandez had two top-10 finishes, including earning medalist honors at the VCU Shootout. Fernandez carded the second-lowest round in school history (66) at the VCU shootout and added his name to the Iowa State record books for his career low and second best tournament score (205).
Junior Borja Virto will return for the spring season, bringing depth to the young team. Virto was ISU's top finisher at the 2011 Big 12 Championships (T31). Freshman Sam Daley also had a strong fall season, ranking third on the team in stroke average (73.0).
