IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa State senior
Nate McCoy became the first golfer in Iowa State history to shoot a 7-under par score Saturday at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational. McCoy's score of 11-under par (68-65=133) leads the tournament by two strokes over Iowa's Chris Brant and Penn State's Anthony DeGol.
McCoy's effort, to go with top-10 performances by
Scott Fernandez and Borja Vitro, have Iowa State positioned in second-place, only six shots behind hosts Iowa in the team competition. Fernandez carded a pair of 70s (140) to sit tied for sixth while Vitro fired consecutive rounds of 71 (142) for a tie in 10th place.
There was plenty of history made around the course by Iowa State. McCoy's career-low second round 65 is the second-lowest round in school history, only behind Chris Baker's 64 in the 2007 Big Four Championship. However, Baker's 64 was only good for a 6-under at the par 70 Elmcrest Country Club in Cedar Rapids, meaning McCoy's 7-under at the par 72 Finkbine Golf Course is a new school record in terms of score relation to par.
Iowa State's team score of 279 in the second round is a season-high and is tied for the ninth-lowest effort in school history.
The Cyclones will head back to the course to complete the final round tomorrow morning.
