Cyclones Fifth, Fernandez Second at VCU Shootout

RICHMOND, Va. - The Iowa State men's golf team placed fifth at the VCU Shootout in Richmond, Va., this afternoon, carding a 54-hole total of 894. Virginia Tech won the team title, surging past Wichita State with a 291 this afternoon for an 878 tally.

Sophomore Scott Fernandez posted another impressive tournament for the Cyclones, tying for second with rounds of 72-70-72 (214). Fernandez, who fell just short of defending his medalist title, has been runner-up medalist in both of Iowa State's tournaments this season. He now has placed in the top-10 in eight of his 15 career tournaments at Iowa State.

Sophomore Sam Daley tied for 14th (71-75-77=223) and Borja Virto and Zach Steffen tied for 33rd at 230.

Maryland's Sean Bosdosh was the medalist by two shots over Fernandez at 212.

Iowa State is back in action Oct. 2-3 at the Rees Jones Invitational in Dafuskie Island, S.C.
