AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's golf program made a giant step last season when it earned a NCAA Regional berth, ending a 13-year postseason drought. Now head coach
Andrew Tank is looking for a repeat encore in 2012-13 as the Cyclones begin their season at the Northern Intercollegiate this weekend.
The Cyclones were outstanding in 2011-12 in Tank's second year at the helm, as Iowa State ranked in the top-60 nationally and finished in the top-five in eight of 13 tournaments. Two Cyclones were individual medalists three times, including true freshman
Scott Fernandez, who broke Iowa State's rookie scoring mark at 73.18.
There will be big shoes to fill, however, with the departure of All-American
Nate McCoy. McCoy should be given much credit for Iowa State's resurgence. The West Des Moines, Iowa native arguably produced the greatest season in the history of Iowa State golf, breaking the single-season scoring mark (71.65) and tying for 29th at the NCAA finals. He was the first Cyclone to play in the NCAA finals since 1980.
Despite the loss of McCoy, there's still plenty of talent on the roster.
Fernandez, now a sophomore, will certainly be one of the leaders. Fernandez ended his rookie season ranked in the top-200 nationally and had six top-10 finishes, including a tournament title at the VCU Shootout. A native of Granada, Spain, Fernandez has been selected to represent Spain in the World Amateur in October.
Senior
Borja Virto, another product of Spain (Gorraiz), tied for 27th at the Big 12 Championships last season and has played in 20 tournaments in his career.
Sam Daley, a sophomore from Wynnum, Australia, produced an outstanding freshman season last year and will again be counted on to contribute to the team's success. Daley's 74.28 stroke average was third on the team and ranks third all-time among Iowa State freshmen.
The fourth and five spots will be filled by a group of four players:
Duncan Croudis (junior, Dunedin, New Zealand),
Zach Steffen (junior, Des Moines, Iowa),
Blake Waller (sophomore, West Des Moines, Iowa) and
Collin Foster (freshman, Waukee, Iowa).
Croudis is the most experienced, compiling a 76.96 stroke average in 31 rounds. Waller played 15 rounds and Steffen registered 12 rounds. Foster redshirted last season.
It's an exciting time for Iowa State men's golf. A brand new state-of-the-art performance facility will debut this season, offering the program one of the finest facilities of its kind nationally.
