CHAMPAIGN,Ill.- Cyclone Sophomore Amanda Paulson set an ARC Pool record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.36 as Iowa State fell, 194-106, at Illinois in the team's first dual of 2013.
“Her setting the record, that was an outstanding swim,” head coach Duane Sorenson said. “It was a great time for a 50 freestyle and we are really impressed.”
Junior Imelda Wistey earned the Cyclones their first event victory of the evening in the 100 breaststroke event. Wistey clocked in with a time of 1:05.00. Emily Wiltsie and Ali Stearns also competed for the Cyclones taking third and fourth place with times of 1:07.01 and 1:08.21, respectively.
The Cyclones saw success in the 200 backstroke event with Bre Loeschke and Marissa Engel taking first and second place, respectively. Loeschke touched the wall with a time of 2:04.77. Engel clocked in with a time of 2:05.69.
“Bre and Marissa did a really nice job in their 200 backstroke,” Sorenson said. “They really swam their races well.”
Samantha Fossum led the Cyclones in the distance events taking second in the 500 freestyle and third in the 1000 freestyle. In the 500 freestlye, Fossum finished with a time of 5:07.25 and in the 1000 freestyle she touched with a time of 10:33.03.
“Even though she didn't place as high in her 1000 freestyle, she swam a really well-controlled and smart race,” Sorenson said. “She also swam an outstanding 500 as far as pacing and racing.”
In the diving well, Elyse Brouillette led the Cyclones with a first place and personal-best score on the 3-meter board. The freshman finished with a score of 300.08.
“It was great to see Elyse break 300,” diving coach Jeff Warrick said. “I thought she did a great job.”
Marley Dobyns took sixth with a score of 214.88. Megan Cohea and Dani Davis took seventh and eighth with scores of 192.23 and 156.67, respectively.
On the 1-meter board, Brouillette finished the evening with a score of 243.07, placing her in third.
Dobyns finished with a score of 223.19 in fifth and Megan Cohea took seventh with a score of 186.67. Davis finished in eighth with a score of 158.32.
“Overall I think we did well; we improved on many things we have been working on,” Warrick said.
The team returns to action with back-to-back duals on Friday Jan. 25 and Saturday Jan 26. The Cyclones will face Nebraska-Omaha on Friday with the meet slated to begin at 6 p.m CST. On Saturday, the Cyclones will face in-state rival UNI for Senior Day with the meet beginning at 1 p.m.
